Angelo Savelli, an Italian painter who lived in America, who passed away in 1995. A very special, and I daresay, a unique Man, one so sensitive and mediumistic, so romantic and transgressive, so unpredictable and unconventional.

A life intensely lived with the strength of intelligence and love, the two magic ingredients which induced Louis Kahn to write:
"The work of Savelli moves from silence to light Stopping at light and asking of it the barest of presence In it lies the essence of poetry, the essence of the poet"

Of Savelli I jealously preserve that magic key which he donated to me, a key that allows me, now that He is no longer here, as when Hewas alive, to read into his hear and listen to the peaceful melodies that emanated. The melodies that are still alive today in his spirit and which are an authentic moral and ethical guide for me.

Angelo is now with Dante, Virgil, Socrates, and Plato, as he has always wished to be in the other dimension; he leaves us his great work and his irreplaceable and magic memories.

Salve ho conosciuto Angelo Savelli nella tipografia di mio padre che ormai non c'e' piu'. Era litografo e gli ha stampato un libro del quale posseggo ancora una copia. Ricordo questo personaggio con un impermeabile bianco che discuteva con mio padre per un colore d' inchiostro che non fosse il solito nero ma qualcosa di diverso. Ricordo che mi aveva invitato ad andarlo a trovarlo in America.

To Whom It May Concern: In the late 1980s, I lived on the 4th floor (#4C) at 257 South Water, New York. Angelo was a wonderful neighbour and friend. He was such kind and gentle man; the world lost an amazing human when Angelo passed on.

For Angelo
I knew Angelo while I taught at Penn State. We shared many good time together while I prepared to bring to Pennsylvania his work in an exhibition at the Zoller Gallery He always told me there was only one person who could photograph his work and that was Rudy Burkhardt. I was pleased when he chose to use the photograph I took for his book. I wrote this poem in remembrance of him, Regards David Rubello

The Great Savelli
Angelo lived creating
a luminous white space
shaped of raw canvas
and white paint

a vast white space he
created to cover his
visual field

Large decisive geometric
dreams shaped with a pair
of cutting shears

It was this white light
like air he sought to
express
a light of emergence

This luminescence grew
into a white sphere
finally blotting him out

No longer visible to
the world…enveloped
by an ethereal white air

Angelo is there toasting
with white wine
still insisting
teaching art and proper
etiquette to a red devil
